Janice Flesburg

June 4, 1933 — November 21, 2020

Janice (Jan) Ruth Flesburg, age 87, passed away on November 21st, 2020, at Centennial Rehab and Healthcare in Moline, Illinois, after a two week illness from contracting Covid-19. She had resided at Heritage Woods, an assisted living facility, in Moline for the last few years of her life.

Jan was born in Albion, Illinois to Archibald and Zelda (Miller) Reed. She was raised in central Illinois and graduated from Toluca High School. She graduated from a beauty school in Peoria and briefly worked as a beautician. On August 8th, 1954, she married Theodore (Ted) Flesburg and they resided on a farm in Wenona, Illinois. After Ted became a jeweler, they moved into the city of Wenona and together started their business, Wenona Jewelry. Jan eventually began a long and satisfying career working as the Office Manager at Wenona Health Center. In retirement, she and Ted moved to a new home in Peru, Illinois. Shortly after Ted’s death in 2008, Jan moved closer to family in Elmhurst and then to Moline.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ted. She is survived by her children, son Larry Flesburg of Davenport, Iowa, daughter Laurel (Dennis) Niska of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Becca (Jade) Miner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rachel (Nick) Bakeris of Littleton, Colorado, Sam Flesburg of Davenport, Iowa, Janel Niska of College Park, Maryland, Bobby Niska of Phoenix, Arizona, Jenna Niska of Phoenix, Arizona and Bradley Niska of Tempe, Arizona. She was blessed with three amazing great grandchildren from Becca and Jade Miner: Reese, Rory and baby Theo. Jan was anticipating the arrival of a fourth great grandchild, a boy due in January, from Rachel and Nick Bakeris. Jan was a very proud mom, Grandmom and Great Grandmom who got tremendous joy from her family.  In addition she is survived by her sister in laws, Geraldine (Jerry) Evenson and Mary Ann (Richard) Cutforth, and many nieces and nephews. Jan is also survived by her beloved best friend, Judy Mueller, at Heritage Woods, who kept her laughing and smiling that wonderful, big smile that she was known for.

Cremation rites will be accorded by Esterdahl Mortuary and Crematory in Moline, Illinois. Due to the current pandemic, a private family graveside service will be arranged at a safer, later date.

Memorials are suggested to Illinois Valley Animal Rescue in LaSalle, Illinois, where they adopted their last cat, Miss Kitty from, who brought great comfort to Jan after Ted’s passing.

In addition, the family is asking for ongoing vigilance in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. The two weeks of her dealing with the ravages of this virus were so difficult, and not being able to be at her side was heart wrenching for each of her family members. None of us want anyone to experience this if it can be prevented. Please mask up, be safe and protect yourself and each other to avoid the loss of a beloved family member.
